Ronald Leopold, director of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, has said that the new Anne Frank play is distasteful.
'Anne', the new stageplay about Anne Frank is due to have its premiere on May 8, in the brand new theatre Theater Amsterdam, which has been built especially for this purpose.
The play uses the literal texts of Anne Frank's diary, and describes the period before she moves to Amsterdam, during her time in Amsterdam in hiding, and until hear death in the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen.
Several people have complained, because visitors of the play can book luxurious dinner arrangements together with the tickets. One of the possibilities is to book a boat ride from the Central Station to the theater, including a welcome with champagne and food.
The complainers find these 'festive' arrangements in bad taste, having a view to the fact that many Jews in the concentration camps died of starvation.
The play is a commercial enterprise, set up under the auspices of the Anne Frank Fund in Basel, Switzerland. This organization wants to set up a Frank Family Center in Frankfurt (Germany) and has demanded that the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam returns some pictures, letters and other documents that it had previously loaned to the Anne Frank House. This has lead to a legal quarrel between the Fund and the Anne Frank House.
