Thunderstorm in Amsterdam takes life

The heavy thunderstorm that went over Amsterdam around 3am last night, has cost a life.

A man was hiding for the weather at a tram stop on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, near the Royal Palace at Dam Square, when the lightning hit a tree. The tree fell over, on the tram stop, killing the man instantly.

The tree also hit the electricity line of the tram. This has caused chaos in the tram services of lines 1, 2, 5, 13, 14 and 17, which is expected to last into the afternoon.

The heavy rain has caused many floodings of streets and basements, in Amsterdam and around.
