Zaanse Schans sees 20% increase of visitors in one year

The popular attraction the Zaanse Schans has attracted 1.9 million visitors in 2015, an increase of 20% compared to 2014.

The Zaanse Schans is especially popular with young Asian tourists. Dutch visitors form a constant 14% of all the visitors, most of them from the region itself.

The Zaanse Schans is an area with historic buildings, including a row of windmills along the Zaan river. The area itself is publicly accessible, without charge.

The windmills (some of which can be visited) are the most popular attraction, but there are also tourist attractions like some old stores, a wooden shoe factory, a cheese factory, a museum etc.

The Zaanse Schans attracts so many visitors that measures may have to be taken. There is brainstorming going on about asking an entrance fee, or somehow disperse the tourist crowds to near-by attractions. So far, nothing concrete has come out of this.
