Like in all countries, in the Netherlands you may find foods and eating habits that are typical, or even unique, to the country.
A good place to study the differences is a supermarket.
You will find lots of different kinds of cheese, and close to the cheese will be the dairy products. Whereas in most other countries yoghurt comes in small packages, with sugar and tastes added to it, the Dutch like eating plain yoghurt. Plain yoghurt is a bit sour, and mostly sold in 1 liter packages.
Another typical dairy product is vla (yellow custard), eaten as dessert.
A classic Dutch meal consists of boiled potatoes, one kind of vegetable and some meat (with gravy). In the past decades, other basic foods like rice and pasta have become popular, but the potatoe-based meal is still popular.
On this page is a list of other typically Dutch food stuffs and food habits.
