Three policemen were wounded during riots that surrounded the soccer match between Ajax and Dinamo Zagreb in the Amsterdam Arena Stadium.
The police arrested 42 supporters, most because of public violence.
The mayor had created a special security zone because of the expected problems, comprising the centre of Amsterdam, the metro line to the Arena Stadium and the area around the Stadium.
The police had information that Ajax supporters wanted to take revenge on Dinamo supporters, because of fights that had happened at an earlier soccer match.
In body searches carried on supporters earlier today, several hand weapons were found.
Violence between the police and supporters happened in the Red Light District in the centre of town, and later near the Arena Stadium.
