The City of Amsterdam proposed names of old ships for new streets in the centre of Amsterdam. They are said to be names of ships that were used to transport slaves in the 18th century.
The new streets are part of a new development just West of the Central Station (Westerdokseiland). As the area is part of the former harbour of Amsterdam, the city officials thought it would be a nice idea to name some of the new streets after old merchant ships.
The 'Winthont' and the 'Leliëndaal', however, were allegedly used to transport slaves.
A city spokesperson said that the matter will be investigated. Also, the Netherlands Institute for Slavery History (Ninsee) will carry out research. The names are not yet final.
