The oldest known painting by Rembrandt van Rijn has been bought by the city of Leiden and museum de Lakenhal.
The painting is 'De Brillenverkoper' (The Spectacles Salesman), which Rembrandt painted in approximately 1623-1624, at the age of 17.
Although Rembrandt lived most of his productive life in Amsterdam, the famous painter was born in Leiden.
With the acquisition, it is the first time that Leiden owns one of Rembrandts paintings.
The painting was already on display, on a long loan, in museum De Lakenhal in Leiden (http://lakenhal.nl).
