Yesterday Bellini's opera 'Norma' had its first public performance in the Opera House in Amsterdam. The star soprano Nelly Miricioiu had to give up her performance to her replacement Lucia Aliberti.
Miricioiu got an acute problem with her voice, so after the break she had to be replaced by Aliberti. Before the break she could still sing, but her voice was clearly not in the right condition.
Miricioiu's dream was to have this performance for her many Amsterdam fans in the Opera House, after 20 years of success in the Concertgebouw Theatre. That dream fell completely apart.
The diva took the end applause in tears, and refused to have 2 bouquets of flowers on stage.
