Nightwatch statue on Rembrandtplein vandalized

Last night one of the statues depicting the famous Nightwatch painting by Rembrandt has been broken.

The statue group was placed on the Rembrandtplein square on the initiative of the business association Rembrandtplein, in celebration of the Rembrandt 400 year.

One of the 22 bronze statues is now lying on the ground. Its head was broken off and saved by one of the hotels on the square. The question is whether the statue can be repaired or must be cast again.

Probably, cameras will be installed to monitor the statue group.

As the statue group is very popular with visitors, the business association wants to keep it on the square after the Rembrandt year has ended.
