Tomorrow's commemoration of the February strike in 1941 in Amsterdam marks the 75th anniversary of the strike. King Willem Alexander will attend the ceremony.
The strike broke out spontaneously on February 25 1941, following the arrest of 427 Jewish men by the Nazi occupiers. The strike was intended as a protest against the arrest.
It did not help, all arrested Jews were deported. The strike was suppressed brutally by the new authorities.
Every year, the strike is commemorated on Jonas Daniël Meyerplein, at the statue the Dokwerker (which was specially created to commemorate the strike).
The Amsterdam public transport (buses, trams, metros AND ferries) will stop for 1 minute at 11am, February 25.
The ceremony at the Dokwerker statue will start 4.30pm.
