Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk, together with their side streets are the busiest shopping area in Amsterdam (and in the Netherlands). The streets have always been shopping streets, and Kalverstraat is the most famous of them (in fact, Kalverstraat is the most expensive street in the Dutch version of the Monopoly game).
The two streets Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk come together at Dam Square.
The street is lined with shops on both sides, and only accessible for pedestrians.
The shops are open 7 days a week.
There are all kinds of shops, but the emphasis is on clothing and shoes, in the middle and lower quality range. And yes, there are exceptions.
Luxury shopping is more a PC Hooftstraat thing.
