The popular large logo characters spelling 'I Amsterdam' have been removed from Museumplein square today.
The meters high characters were enormously popular with tourists, as a photo opportunity.
The new city government, with Groen Links (=Green Left) as the biggest political party, wanted to remove the characters. The official reason for the decision was that the logo symbolized individualism too much. 'Togetherness' is deemed a more important value for Amsterdam.
Unofficially, the logo may be seen as a symbol for excessive mass tourism, which topic has become a centre of attention in the last years.
The 'I Amsterdam' logo characters will be renovated, and then taken to various other locations in and around Amsterdam.
Hosts are posted at the location to explain to tourists what happened to the I Amsterdam characters.
