Various squares in Amsterdam have been decorated with christmas trees.
The tree on Dam Square was lit by alderman Erik Koldenhof. The 18 meter high tree has 40,000 lights, that are energy efficient LED lights.
The length of the light chain in the tree is 4 kilometers.
The tree on Dam Square will stand until the beginning of January. In other years the tree had to be removed before the year's end, because of the New Year's Eve party held on Dam Square.
The big New Year's Eve party will this year be held on the Museum square (between the Van Gogh and the Rijksmuseum).
