The Bijenkorf is the main department store in Amsterdam. It is part of a chain of Bijenkorf stores, but the Amsterdam branch is definitely the flagship store.
It has 5 floors of fashion, household items, furniture, books, etc., in the higher quality end of the market. The top floor is completely occupied by a self-serving lunchroom/restaurant (with roof terrace).
On the ground floor you will find some shops-in-a-shop, operated by top brands as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Hermès , Burberry, Chanel, Fendi, etc.
The Bijenkorf has a large 3 days shopping event every year, at the end of September, called 'Drie Dwaze Dagen' ('Three Crazy Days').
It is a huge sale with large discounts, which attracts thousands of shoppers every year. You can notice it because of all the yellow plastic bags the Bijenkorf has especially made for DDD.
Another tradition is the Sinterklaas decoration in the store, in the weeks before December 5. A huge 'Zwarte Piet' climbs up and down a rope in the central staircase of the store - exciting children every year.
There is a public lavatory on the 5th floor.
