The Beurs van Berlage building, the large former goods exchange, maybe put on sale if Amsterdam Centrum does not get financial help.
The Amsterdam Centrum neighbourhood council is responsible for the maintenance of the prominent building along the Damrak in front of the Central Station.
However, Amsterdam Centrum now says it can not bear the cost any longer for necessary maintenance and repairs. There is a shortage of some E 13 million. The accountant of the neighbourhood council said that the finance shortage is 8% of the total budget of Amsterdam Centrum.
If the City of Amsterdam does not help, the building may have to be put on sale.
The building was built in 1903 by the famous Dutch architect Berlage, and is a listed monument. It is now used for exhibitions, concerts and conferences.
