The Stadsarchief (City Archives) published this animation on its Youtube channel. It beautifully shows the growth of Amsterdam in the 17th century, in a few minutes.
You can clearly see how the world-famous canal area started to grow in the beginning of the 17th century on the West side. Later in the 17th century the part near the Amstel was built.
