According to an investigation by Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf (www.telegraaf.nl), 51 people have died in the canals of Amsterdam in the last 3 years.
Only one of the deaths involves a crime case. All others got into the canals by their own doing, and couldn't get out.
One reason that the victims couldn't get out is that the lifeline ropes that should be attached to the quays are frequently stolen.
According to De Telegraaf, most victims are men who urinate into the water and fall into the canals - possibly under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
Urinating in public carries a fine of E 90.-.
