Amsterdam RAI to host Davis Cup Tennis

During the weekend of February 10-12, 2006, the Amsterdam RAI will host top-level international tennis, when the Netherlands team plays a Davis Cup first-round elite World Group tie against Russia.

The Netherlands team is expected to include Raemon Sluiter and Martin Verkerk, who is doing everything in his power to recover from an injury in time for the Davis Cup event. Other hot contenders for selection by team captain Tjerk Bogstra include the Amsterdam-based tennis players Peter Wessels and Melle van Gemerden, who have performed well in recent Challenger tournaments.

Russia is expected to have a strong line-up, with four of the country’s tennis players ranked among the world’s top 50, namely Nikolay Davidenko (seeded 5th), Marat Safin (12th), Igor Andreev (27th) and Mikhail Youzhny (43rd).
