The soccer stadium 'Amsterdam Arena' will be called 'Johan Cruijff Arena'. This news came out yesterday, after long negotations between the most important stakeholders.
As soon as the world-famous soccer player Johan Cruijff died on March 24, 2016, the idea surfaced to call the Amsterdam Arena after Johan Cruijff. This wasn't however as easy as it seemed to be. One of the problems was that potential sponsors might want to name the stadium after their own company, which would no longer be possible.
Apparently, all problems have been overcome, as the Amsterdam City Council and the management of the Amsterdam Arena, and of soccerclub Ajax have signed an intention agreement to rename the Arena to Johan Cruijff Arena.
The decision was made public on the day Crijff would have become 70 years old.
The new name is supposed to become effective in half a year from now.
