Amsterdam-Beijing Classic Car Endurance Rally 2006 starts on Dam Square

The Amsterdam-Beijing Classic Car Endurance Rally, the biggest ever such rally across the Euro-Asian continent, will start on July 15, 2006, organizers announced on Sunday.

The route will start in front of the Royal Palace on Dam Square. The rally ends in Beijing, on August 13 2006.

The rally is designed for those who don't have a rally competition licence but enjoy the ultimate challenge of long distance spirited driving.

One hundred classic cars will take part, and the rally will lead through 14 countries on 2 continents. The distance between Amsterdam and Beijing is 17,500 kilometers (10,900 miles).

The organization says it is planning to build a Chinese Wall on Dam Square in order to give the start event on July 14 a Chinese atmosphere, and there are also plans to have the participating cars enter the city in a festive parade.
