Alderman Laetitia Griffith (Economic Affairs) has said not to consider the abolishment of tourist tax in Amsterdam.
Recently the cities of Amersfoort and Rotterdam announced they would abolish the tourist tax altogether. Touris tax is a tax levied to accommodation providers, by local authorities.
Whereas in a city like Rotterdam the cost of the abolishment is EUR 2.5 million, for Amsterdam this would be EUR 21.5 million. The tax is 5% on the accommodation price.
'Tourists don't really notice the tax (which is included in the accommodation price), but for the city of Amsterdam it would be an important loss. We don't want to think about it', said a spokesperson of the city.
