News of: Saturday, November 28 2015,
Today (Saturday) is the start of the annual Amsterdam Light Festival. The opening show is today, in front of the Opera House, from 5.15pm.
This year's theme of the festival is friendship. Throughout the centre of Amsterdam, 38 works of art with light can be seen, in and around the canals.
As usual, there are two routes: a water route and a walking tour, called the Illuminade. The water route is visible until January 17, 2016 and the Illuminade walking tour is open from December 10 until January 3.
The lights will be on from 5pm until 11pm (10pm for the Illuminade).
The water route is best seen from a boat, but many of the works can be seen by walking (or cycling) around. The route is on a map on the festival website.
The festival can be visited for free. You can book boat tours and guided tours through the festival website (not for free).
The opening show will be held today in front of the Opera house (called 'De Nationale Opera en Ballet'), in the presence of HRH Princess Beatrix (former Queen of the Netherlands). The opening show can be visited by everyone, for free. It starts 5.15pm.
