Today is the first opening day of the Ziggo Dome, the new pop theatre in Amsterdam.
The Ziggo Dome is built for pop music concerts. It has a capacity of 17,000 visitors, which makes it one of the largest theatres in the country.
Special attention has been paid to the acoustics, to get a good sound quality in the hall by reducing the resonance to a minimum, but yet create an intimate atmosphere. Also, attention has been paid to the vision lines for the audience.
The Ziggo Dome fills a gap between the 'next door neighbours' the Heineken Music Hall (capacity 9,000) and the Arena Stadium (45,000 visitors).
Various famous artists have already planned concerts in the Ziggo Dome, such as Pearl Jam (June 26, 27), Madonna (July 7, 8 ), Lady Gaga (September 17, 18), Radiohead (October 14), André Rieu (November 30), Deep Purple (December 4) and Muse (December 17).
The Ziggo Dome will not only be used for pop concerts, however. There will also be stageplays, sports events and other shows. It is expected some 100 events will be organized in the Dome, with about 1,000,000 visitors.
The Ziggo Dome is also a special architectural addition to Amsterdam. In the daytime the Ziggo Dome is a large black box. But it is covered with 840,000 LED lights, that transform it into a giant video wall in the evening.
The theater is located near the Arena Stadium, in Amsterdam South East. From the centre, it is best reached by metro, to station Bijlmer Arena.
