The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum can now be visited online through the website http://www.googleartproject.com.
The 2 museums are in the list of 17 top museums that Google has photographed and put online.
You can walk through rooms of the museums, the same way as with Google Streetview.
Various top pieces of the museums have been photographed in a very high resolution, so that you can zoom in to great detail. The photographs have a resolution of about 10,000 times an ordinary digital photo camera.
Whereas some of the works have been photographed in very high quality, the quality of the pictures in the exhibition rooms is much less.
One of the paintings photographed in high resolution is the Nachtwacht (Nightwatch) by Rembrandt van Rijn. The Nightwatch is commonly seen as the most famous piece of art on display in Amsterdam.
The high-resolution painting from the Van Gogh Museum is 'The Bedroom' (De Slaapkamer).
Other museums participating in the project in addition to the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam include the MOMA and Metropolitan Museum in New York, the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the National Gallery and Tate Britain in London, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid and the Palace of Versailles.
