Tanker destroys sailing yacht in IJ

A tanker has hit a sailing yacht in the IJ, the water behind the Central Station.

A family of 4 was on the sailing yacht, but they could jump into the water before the tanker hit the yacht.
The yacht was completely destroyed.

The family (with 2 children) was saved by other ships that were passing by.

In 2003 a similar incident happened in the IJ. A sailing boat sunk, and 1 person drowned, after it was hit by a freight ship.

The IJ is used a lot by freight ships and private boats, it is one of the busiest waters near Amsterdam. The Amsterdam-Rijn Canal ends in the IJ, and this canal is one of the busiest freight routes in Europe.
