Amsterdam Schiphol airport is not only completely smoke-free on the inside, it also wants to ban smokers from near the entrance doors.
The airport states that people who want to get into the airport buildings have to make their way through a smoke curtain, caused by smokers who now have to smoke outside. Also, smokers are sometimes blocking the entrances, if there are too many of them.
Schiphol is one of the first airports in Europe to become completely smoke-free as of January 1 of this year.
No substitute smoking facilities for passengers will be placed in the terminal. The terminal area encompasses the passageway to and from the parking areas and the WTC Schiphol.
Later this year (in July 2008), smoking will be prohibited in all cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels in the Netherlands. With this measure Holland follows several other countries in Europe that have already banned smoking.
About 70% of the cafes, restaurants and hotels said they will implement a non-smoking policy starting January 1.
