Scheltema is a household name in the Amsterdam bookstore field. For decades, it had a huge 6 floors store at Koningsplein. Probably under the influence of the internet, this was no longer feasible, and in 2014 the company went almost bankrupt.
Today Scheltema is still very much alive at a new location at Rokin, very close to Dam Square. A bit hidden still, because of the construction work going on on Rokin, but this will be over at one point. Then, Scheltema will have a top location again along the 'Red Carpet' of Amsterdam.
The store has 5 floors, with 85,000 second handles titles on stock, and 120,000 new books. There is a large section with foreign language books (English, German, French, Spanish). On the ground floor are gift books, and titles about Amsterdam.
On the first floor is a cafe (Vascobelo) and on level 3 is a lavatory for clients.
