Sail Amsterdam 2005: 2.5 million visitors

The Sail 2005 event has drawn about 2.5 million visitors to Amsterdam.

This morning the Sail-Out took place; all boats that were on Sail Amsterdam left Amsterdam through the harbour of IJmuiden. Other than the Sail-in, on Wednesday, this hardly drew any visitors.

With 2.5 million visitors the event drew the same amount of visitors as the previous edition of Sail, in 2000. The organization of Sail is happy with the number, as it means the public was not scared away by messages of possible terrorist attacks.

There were no major incidents during the event. One man drowned when he tried to step on board a ship but fell into the water, and there was one collission of 2 boats.
Yesterday there was an attempt to rob a money transport from one of the Sail coin sales points, but this attempt failed.
On Sunday evening the train station of Utrecht was closed down for a few hours after a bomb alert. The bag only contained a stolen notebook computer, but many visitors of Sail who wanted to go home were stranded at Amsterdam Central Station.

The next edition of Sail Amsterdam is scheduled for 2010.
