Police shoots shoplifter in Bijenkorf department store in Amsterdam

This morning, a shoplifter has been shot in his leg, after threatening the police with a knife.

The man tried to steal a suitcase. The police tried to arrest him, but the shoplifter threatened them with a large knife.
As the situation was threatening, and it was impossible to place him under arrest, the police decided to shoot him in his leg, after giving a warning.

The incident took place in the well-known Bijenkorf department store, at Dam Square.

The thief has been transported to the hospital for treatment.

The state police are investigating the incident, to see whether the procedures have been followed accurately.

Part of the department store was blocked off by the police, but the store remained open.
