Amsterdam has 4 so-called P+R (park and ride) locations, parking places outside the centre, where you can park your car for E 5.50 per 24 hours.
Normally, if you park your car on one of these locations, you get a maximum of 2 public transport tickets to go the centre of Amsterdam and back.
Starting October 1 (until January 6, the end of the Christmas school holidays), you will get a maximum of 5 free public transport tickets. With this test, Amsterdam hopes to promote that visiting groups and families park their cars in the outskirts and not in the centre of Amsterdam.
On the Amsterdam parking website you can find more information (the test period is not mentioned on the English language pages).
