Niek Engelsmanbrug

Niek Engelsmanbrug

This bridge, crossing the Keizersgracht canal, very close to the Homomonument, is named after Niek Engelschman, an openly gay member of the resistance during World War II.
During the German occupation he was involved in creating and sending illegal newspapers. He lived at several addresses, to escape arrest by the Germans.
After the war he was involved with setting up the COC, the main Dutch gay/lesbian lobby organization in the Netherlands.
