Formerly known as 'het Muziektheater', the Nationale Opera & Ballet intends to be an international top institute for opera and ballet. Part of the institute are the Nationale Opera and the Nationale Ballet.

The theatre is part of the same building as the City Hall.
The complex is nicknamed 'Stopera' (this derives from 'STadhuis', which means City Hall, and OPERA, together Stopera).
