Grotewerf is one of the old, very small and picturesque hamlets on the former island of Marken. It is built on a small hill ('werf'), to protect it from the sea.
The houses were built very close together, leaving only space for a few very narrow paths and alleys in between the houses.

Rozewerf, Moeniswerf and Wittewerf are similar small hamlets on Marken.
