Frankendael is the only remaining summer residence mansion in Amsterdam. Many rich Amsterdam merchants in the 18th century had large summer residences outside Amsterdam, where they lived during the summer when Amsterdam was too hot and smelly.
Most of these places were closer to the sea coast, and most of them no longer exist.

Frankendael is a beautiful example, now located in a public park (also called Frankendael). In the former stable house is a restaurant, Merkelbach.
