Amsterdam has always been a city of books. There are still relatively many book stores in Amsterdam, that keep on surviving the competition by the internet stores.

Probably the main general book store is Scheltema, which is now located at Rokin, close to Dam Square. But there are more book stores in Amsterdam, see here for a list.
