Amsterdam gets new landmark attraction near Central Station

The Overhoeks Tower, located near the Central Station, will become a hotel/nightclub/restaurant.

The Overhoeks Tower used to be owned by the oil company Shell, together with some land around it, along the North shore of the IJ (water behing the Central Station). This area has been sold by Shell to the City of Amsterdam, and is currently being redeveloped.

The 21 floors Overhoeks Tower will get a revolving restaurant on top, a panorama deck, a nightclub and a restaurant. Some of the floors will become a hotel.

The tower had been empty for a few years, the City of Amsterdam put it up for sale for a minimum amount of 10 million Euro.

The Overhoeks Tower is a prominent landmark at the back of the Central Station. The Overhoeks area has recently become quite busy, with the opening of the EYE Filminstituut (the white building next to the tower), and the Tolhuistuin garden on the other side.

The Overhoeks Tower is scheduled to re-open in 2015. The location will then probably become a tourist attraction, further adding to the development of the North side of the IJ river at the back of the Central Station.

On a side note: the location has been a tourist attraction in earlier centuries. In the 17th century, the location of the Overhoeks Tower was the place of the gallows where criminals were hung. In those times, this attracted quite a few spectators.
