Amsterdam car parking rates under pressure

P1, which has one of the parking garages in downtown Amsterdam, has substantially lowered its price for 24 hour parking.

P1 has announced a price of E 20,- per 24 hours in the parking garage near the Central Station in Amsterdam, instead of the normal E 55,-, which has become a normal rate for parking in the centre of Amsterdam.

The parking garag is listed as number 1 on http://www.simplyamsterdam.nl/map/amsterdam-parking-garages.htm .

Apparently, the parking garage has many empty places, particularly outside weekends.

Unfortunately for most international tourists, the rate is only to get through the P1 website (www.p1.nl), which is in the Dutch language entirely.
The E 20,- places must be reserved online, and at least 2 days before arrival.

The move of P1 is remarkable, as parking rates in Amsterdam are notoriously high (Amsterdam is one of the most expensive places to park in Europe). On-street parking in the downtown area has gone up to E 5,- per hour.

P1 wants to expand its number of parking places. Also, a new parking garage is being built in the centre of Amsterdam. Therefore, it may well be that other garages also drop their prices in the near future.
